Summer Reading and Dating our children!

Back in early May, as school for the year was winding down, I asked each of our boys to sit with me to read. With the hectic pace of this past Spring, I had not been as diligent in getting the boys to work on their reading each day.

Well, to say that I was disappointed in their progress would have been understating things a bit. Despite the fact that each had "done well" that year in school, there was very little progress in their reading.

So was born,
"Mama's Summer Reading Boot Camp!"

Anyone who's adopted Internationally a child whose native language was anything other than English knows that reading mastery is no small task. There are challenges that linger and even years after coming home, reading can still be a major hurdle.
I knew that it was going to take intense daily effort to see any lasting progress.

I also knew all too well that I would have 4 completely unwilling participants.

So, Tom and I consulted and decided that every morning before I went to work, I would sit the boys down and do a reading lesson. We went backward quite a ways from where we thought they had come, but it was worth it.

So, back to the beginning of the 2nd grade curriculum we went.

So, it began. Every morning, I'd get out the white board, choose a few phonics rules or sound blends to cover and we would review them together and each boy would then spend at least 30 minutes each day working their way through the workbook.

Our Hooked on Phonics curriculum is broken up into two main units for 2nd grade.

Blue level and Green Level

Occasionally, someone would have a "reading buddy" to lounge around with!

Upon successful completion of each level, the boys earned a "date night" with either Mom or Dad. Not only did that serve as a small motivator, but it also allowed us the chance to spend some one on one time with each of our boys doing something that they liked.

We read at the dining room table, we read in the office, we read in the cars, we read everywhere we could.

Slowly but surely, progress was made. Before too long, each boy successfully completed a reading unit and had their first "date night".

Cooper and Colin earned one at the same time, so Tom took Cooper to the movies and I went with Colin. But, beforehand, we treated each of the boys to a little frozen yogurt.

Another fun night was my date with Cooper and Tommy to the movies.
We met Dad for an early dinner that evening before he went off to teach at the college and treated the kids to burgers at Steak & Shake.

After a yummy dinner, the two youngest boys and I went to see Earth to Echo.

as you can see, we had the place all to ourselves! I guess most folks don't go to 5PM movies on weeknights.

We had a really fun night together without all those pesky "big boys".

My most recent "date" was with my eldest son, Colin. My most reluctant "student".
I will be forever baffled by how willing this child is to work his fingers to the bone, literally, to help someone in need, but how aggressively he fights when it comes to learning English.
He is a smart kid, but English is just hard, especially for someone who only started learning it at age 14.

This date night was dinner out, at his request.

We dined at Brixx Oven Baked Pizza.

Followed by a shake at Sonic.
Needless to say, neither of these food groups are common at our house lately, so these are rare treats for our boys!

As we embark on a new school year this week, I am pleased with the new-found progress that each of our boys has made this summer with their reading and hope that it will help them as they begin their 11th, 9th, 6th and 5th grade school years!

Now that all 4 have finished the 2nd grade level, they have moved on to the Master Reader curriculum and will continue to work on this step by step in addition to their assigned school work.

Hopefully, their ESL exams this year will show a substantial improvement.

Two more precious boys are HOME!

We are HOME!

So, I need to beg forgiveness for not posting very much while in China.

I have lots of excuses, so I thought I would list them for you... :-)

Cameron.
Connor.
Cooper.

Skyping Home.

Bonding.

Scheduled appointments.

Meeting new (or old, online) friends.

Occasionally assisting my great travel team from Lifeline.

Working.
(Yes, I confess. I worked.  Not nearly as much as my wonderful new assistant and the team that backed me up while I was away, but none the less, I worked.)
You see, when God allows you to work in a ministry about which you are deeply and personally passionate, you just do it. It becomes a part of you.  As I was in China, living the early days with two amazing young boys, a part of my heart was with the Hong Kong and SC families that I serve. Their needs were never far from my thoughts, so as I was able, I did my best to coordinate things from afar!

And last but not least...

FACEBOOK.
(my own personal photo album and excuse for not blogging...)

So, if you are NOT one of my many facebook friends, and want to be, send a friend request so you can see all the photos I posted over the past couple weeks.

All that said, I know that some of you here are NOT on facebook and one or two maybe even really DO live under the proverbial rock, so...

Here is a glimpse of our two newest sons home for the first time!

Cooper starting out on the long (L-O-N-G) flight home!

So grateful for the distraction of technology on a flight like this!

Here we are at the Charleston airport!
Midnight!

Showing the boys their new rooms...

Tom even had the beds turned down and ready for the boys to arrive.

After a full night's sleep, the boys promptly went through the piles on the table and found the new Yo-yos and other small toys/books we brought home.  It was like Christmas morning around here!

We must take a break in the story here to represent the 5 hour "nap" I took this afternoon!

Once I woke up...correction...was woken up, it was almost time for dinner!

Colin grabbed the camera and starting clicking away.

Our first family dinner as a family of 7!

After dinner, we continued with the one goal of the day...LAUNDRY!
*Why exactly did I think it was a good idea to teach my new children to wear clean clothes everyday?????? #times5!

Cameron, my best clothes folder, was on "teacher duty" after dinner and showed Cooper how to fold the clothes.

For those of you who just gasped...and thought, "What?  Chores?  They just got home!"

Breathe.

It's all good and I plan to blog on adoptive parenting and raising boys over the coming months, so stay tuned!

The Halleluia Chorus! Guangzhou at last!

We are so very grateful to be in our last city for this trip.

Guangzhou, China is the city where all American adoptive families process their child's US Visa and get permission to leave the country with their newly adopted child.

By comparison to most provinces and cities, Guangzhou is much more "comfortable".

By comparison to our most recent province experience, it is..well- heavenly!

I could have sworn that as I walked into the Garden Hotel in Guangzhou
I heard someone singing the
Halleluia Chorus!

All the adoptive families who have been on this journey before know exactly what I mean.
It's a much more "western-friendly" city and cleaner and quieter than any province I've been in yet.

The staff is amazing and our in country Lifeline team is just outstanding!

The boys continue to do well together and are getting along very well.
Here they are "representing" in the lobby:

For those who haven't been to the Garden before and may be traveling soon, it will not disappoint.

The rooms are well appointed
 (except there are no drawers???)
 and very clean.

We have what they call a "small suite" with one bedroom (2 twin beds) and a separate living room/work station.  It is quite nice and plenty of room for an extra cot which we have.

It is also so nice to be here with such nice families, including our great friends from down the street.

Today, we went to the new Medical building in GZ and the boys had their check ups for the US Visa.

They have changed the TB test procedures since our last visit and now all the children must have blood drawn.  What makes that worse for most parents is that they are not allowed in the room, so their kiddos are being stuck and they can't hold their hands.  I saw many a toddler come out of there screaming today.

My boys did ok, but certainly weren't thrilled.

It was so crowded and crazy in there that I really didn't take too many pictures.

Connor was the only child that had to get vaccinations because he is over 10.  Cooper made the cut by just a couple months, so other than the TB blood draw, he was left alone, but Connor had 3 shots and one oral vaccine to take.

Right before bed tonight he was rubbing his left arm and telling me that it hurt (with charades, of course, he doesn't have the words yet.) I am sure his arm will be sore for a day or two.  They were not particularly gentle in the administration of these shots.

This is how my boys passed the time while we waited...

Gotta love electronic babysitters on a trip like this!

Tomorrow, it is off to church and then our first day to wander and shop in the afternoon.  I am looking forward to hanging out a bit with the gang of families here this week.

Hoping to blog more this week, but keeping up with three boys everywhere we go has really worn me out!

Please keep praying for safety, health and bonding!

Connor's Gotcha Day- Part 1

So today was amazing.  I am honestly too tired to write a proper blog post tonight and have a crazy day ahead, but I wanted to at least share photos with those of you who are not on my facebook page.  Check out the newest member of the Rylands family!

Before we entered the building...

Cameron (left) with his new big brother, Connor, age 13.
Our first partial family photo!

Here I am showing Connor photos of the family from my phone

After we left the Civil Affairs office, of course we had to stop at Wal-Mart!

The weather has been much warmer than we anticipated, so we needed to look for shorts.  Come to find out... Connor, who is 18 months older than his younger brother, Cameron, is in fact much thinner. So, we had to get smaller sizes for him even though he is taller. #Skinny!

Once we returned to the hotel, it was time for some fun in the pool. (and to assess if he could swim- yeah, he can't!)

But, he had a blast splashing Cameron and me!

After the pool it was time for a quiet dinner in the room. What's on the menu?

What else?  Noodle bowls, of course!
A favorite in the Rylands house.

Connor and Cameron "cooking" dinner!

Enjoying their masterpieces!
gAfter dinner, we skyped with Tom and he got to "meet" his newest son for the first time!
Connor was already so much more at ease and was acting silly and playful the whole time.

Great night!

Thank you to the army of believers who have been praying for our sons for months!
Can't wait to sign final papers tomorrow!

Yes, we are in China!

Yes friends, we are in China!

I am sorry that I've been neglectful in getting a post up until now.

We arrived in Hong Kong very late on Thursday evening
and by the time we got to the hotel and got settled for bed, it was around 1 AM Friday.

As much as I would have liked to rest on Friday, it was the only opportunity I had to visit with my partners in Hong Kong from Mother's Choice.
(For those who do not know, Mother's Choice is the licensed child placing agency
in Hong Kong that Lifeline partners with.)

These ladies were wonderful hosts.

We took a bus from the Marriott to the Tung Chung Metro Station.
From there, we had the adventure of getting tickets and finding our way to the entrance.
We rode all the way to Hong Kong Station (last stop) and met one of the Social Workers there.

Janice took us to the Peak Tram where we rode a tram car up the side of a mountain and saw some amazing views of the city.

Then we went to visit the rest of the staff at Mother's Choice.

The Mother's Choice Building in Hong Kong

From Left to Right: Stella (Social Worker), Me, Cameron, and Connie (Social Work Supervisor)
I was able to see several of the special kiddos on our Hong Kong waiting children page
and love on them.

I also went to the Kowloon Hospital to visit "Allison" from our waiting list.

It is great to be able to see these children personally and send pictures and videos to the Mamas and Daddies working so hard to get them home!

By this time, it was 5PM local time and to say we were tired is really understating things.

We had to take an hour long bus ride back to our hotel from Kowloon and arrived back around 6.

Despite our exhaustion, we had made plans to meet a new friend for dinner.

These new friends have a real heart for adoption and have themselves adopted two beautiful children from China. (got to see pictures!)

We "met" last year while we were in the process of adopting Cameron and I found out that they had been praying for Cameron to find a family.
How cool is that?
Especially cool since I also learned that they lived in Hong Kong!

So, when I realized that my travels would take me through HK this time, I just had to meet them!

They have been so supportive of our adoptions and lifted us up in prayer and we are truly blessed to have met them.

This sweet couple met us for dinner at our hotel and despite the painfully difficult jetlag, we had the most delightful time getting to know them.

After dinner we crashed. HARD.

The following day, (Saturday local time), we had plans to go sightsee a bit, but apparently the Lord had other plans.

I spent Friday night and all day Saturday feeling awful! So awful that we didn't leave the room most of the day.

Even though our dear friends were in town adopting their daughter, I just couldn't leave.

But, after a long afternoon nap and getting a lot of computer work done, Mom called downstairs to make me an appointment for a pedicure!

Now most of you might think that she was trying to perk me up, but...

truth be told... I think she was embarrased by my feet! Four adoptions in 19 months have not left much time or money for such luxuries ladies.

I admit it, my feet were horrible!

But now?

Perty toes!  Yes, I said perty.

So, Sunday came and we enjoyed a good breakfast and got ourselves to the airport.  A quick "good-bye for now" to our Charleston buddies, Jessica and  Travis and off we went.
(We are meeting back up with them in
Guangzhou at the end of this week).

---------------------
So we are now in Chongqing.

Thanks to knowing some people in high places...(a brother-in-law that works for Marriott)
We landed a beautiful room on the Executive floor of the JW Marriott in Chongqing.

It may just be the nicest room I've ever seen.  I will try to get some pics for you later in case anyone else decides to stay here in the future.

We are only staying for 2 nights, but they will be 2 nice, comfy nights!

Our guide, Michael, is quite nice and seems very experienced.  He took us shopping in a nearby shopping plaza for essentials.

It is now 10:30 PM on Sunday night and we will be meeting our newest son, Connor, in about 16 hours.  We will leave the hotel at 1:30 and head to Civil Affairs to meet him for the first time.

That will be about 2 AM for all our East Coast friends...for those of you on the west coast...you may still be awake when we get there.

I will try my best to post a pic as soon as I can.

Good night all!
